Deacon Ministry at Fellowship Greenville

DEACON MINISTRY AT FELLOWSHIP GREENVILLE

Historical Context: Fellowship Greenville (formerly Southside Baptist) has evolved its deacon ministry over time:

  • 1946: Deacons served as overseers alongside the Senior Pastor
  • 1996: Transition to elder leadership with deacons meeting various needs within the body
  • 2025: Development of deacon teams serving under the Elders’ direction

WHO THEY ARE

Biblical Foundation: At Fellowship Greenville, we believe the New Testament establishes a pattern of church leadership with elders and deacons working closely together. Elders provide spiritual oversight and teaching, while deacons serve as helpers to the elders, carrying out practical ministry tasks as needed in the local body.

The concept of deacon ministry emerges from Acts 6:1-7, where the apostles appointed seven godly men to handle practical needs while they focused on prayer and teaching. While this passage doesn't explicitly use the term "deacon," it establishes the principle of appointing qualified assistants to help care for church members.

There is some debate about whether women can serve as deacons. Our church believes 1 Timothy 3:11 allows for both male and female deacons, with slightly different but complementary requirements. This fits with other examples in the Bible like Phoebe being referred to as a "servant" or "deacon" in Romans 16.

The Qualifications: The qualifications for deacons are similar to elders, and focus on character and maturity, but without the same teaching responsibilities. The specific duties of deacons are not as clearly defined in Scripture, as they can vary based on the needs of each local church. The Greek word "diakonos" simply means "servant." They are qualified individuals who must meet specific biblical requirements outlined in 1 Timothy 3:8-13 and Titus 2:3-5, including:

Men

  • Dignified (v8) — respected by others
  • Not double-tongued (v8) — not people-pleasers
  • Not addicted to much wine (v8) — self-controlled, not making much of wine
  • Not greedy for dishonest gain (v8) —
  • Hold to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience (v9)
  • Must be tested to show themselves trustworthy (v10)
  • Husband of one wife (v12)
  • Manage their children and household well (v12)

Women

  • Dignified (v11—corresponds to “dignified,” v8)
  • Not slanderers (v11—corresponds “not double-tongued, v8)
  • Sober-minded (v11—corresponds to “not addicted to much wine, v8)
  • Faithful in all things (v11—a more generalized, statement of vv9, 12)

For those who serve well as deacons will be rewarded with respect from others and will have increased confidence in their faith in Christ Jesus (v13 NLT)

WHAT THEY DO

Deacons work alongside and under the direction of the elders, serving as assistants to the elders and pastors, helping meet the church's practical needs so that elders can focus on prayer, teaching, and spiritual oversight. Their specific duties vary according to the local church's needs.
